Conspiracy in Collars

Submitted September 20th, 2000 by gcallahan

Today’s London is a frightening place.  Not only do the citizens of this city have to contend with modern threats of crime and accidents, but they also must be aware of a supernatural threat that has been spreading through London for decades.

However, there is something behind this threat that makes it more sinister.  There is a conspiracy afoot regarding this threat.  A conspiracy dedicated to keeping the people of London in ignorance.

This conspiracy is heralded by a sinister force of collared individuals.  These folks, wearing gold collars and carrying archaic weapons, have appeared at nearly every supernatural occurrence witnessed by myself.

These individuals have covered up the truth, pulling the shroud of ignorance over the publics’ eyes, and hiding the fact that there is a significant supernatural threat in London.

I have personally witnessed no less than three instances where one of these collared conspirators have arrived after an unbelievable event happened.  These mysterious figures would appear through conventional means, often in a nondescript automobile, and become involved with the event.  In one case, they confronted what seemed to be an ordinary mouse walking down Regent Street.  After a few minutes of frantic argument, the mouse signaled his surrender, and disappeared in a flash of light.

In another event, a pair of these collared miscreants appeared at one of the most haunted pubs in London.  The two apparently entered the Old Bull and Bush after hours, during which time odd lights and sounds came out of the pub.  They appeared shortly afterwards, the shorter lending a supporting shoulder to his taller companion.

These and other events have led me to start an investigation into this conspiracy, an investigation which I plan to keep you apprised of as long as the Compass is willing to print my letters.

Salisbury Plain: Magical Vacation Spot

Submitted September 20th, 2000 by Editor

Dear Compass,

Just wanted to write in and talk to your readers about the recent recommendations on weekend vacations in Britain.

I just returned from a weekend retreat in Salisbury Plain, and wanted to expand on the most excellent article printed on the September 6th issue.

I, along with a group of close friends, decided on a camping trip to Salisbury Plain. We opted to visit Avebury, a neolithic site similar to the famous Stonehenge.  We camped in a friendly farmer’s field, sharing tales of our everyday lives as well as speculating on the nature of the nearby monoliths.

It’s at this point that my tale takes a surreal turn.  Several hours into our second night, we noticed strange lights in the distance, near the Avebury Monoliths.

Several of us, myself included, left the campsite and trekked overland the few kilometers towards the stone circles.  While still over a kilometer away, we began to hear strange, unearthly music.  We stopped just before the last hill, and listened.  Although the hills blocked the view of the henge, the music carried clearly though the air.  We stayed there, hidden by the earth, and let the sound wash over us.  We must have been there for hours, as it was almost dawn before the sounds stopped.

I wanted to say thank you for the recommendation, my friends and I had a marvelous time, made all the more magical by that ethereal music that second night.

Sincerely,

Emily Cavendish
